LGBTQ+ Affirming Therapy
LGBTQ+ affirming therapy focuses on working toward authenticity and self-acceptance regarding sexual orientation and/or gender identity and expression. Issues addressed in counseling can include coming out, internalized homophobia/biphobia/transphobia, compulsive heterosexuality, gender identity affirmation and transgender support. Shine Therapy follows WPATH’s Standards of Care and writes letters of support for medical transition procedures and services for clients. See WPATH’s website https://www.wpath.org/ for further information about the standards of care.
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing Therapy)
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy is an interactive psychotherapy technique used to effectively treat trauma, post-traumatic stress disorder, anxiety, grief, depression, anger issues, performance anxiety, addiction and other mental health concerns. EMDR is not a talk therapy and does not involve describing trauma or other disturbing topics in detail. It instead focuses on changing the emotions, thoughts, and behaviors resulting from distress related to trauma. It signals the brain to use its natural mechanism for healing through a process called bilateral stimulation. For most, EMDR therapy can resolve trauma in fewer sessions than with other psychotherapies. For more details about EMDR, visit the website of the Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing International Association (EMDRIA) https://www.emdria.org/about-emdr-therapy/
Teletherapy
In addition to in-office visits I offer the option of therapy via secure video to clients located anywhere in the state of Michigan. You can be seen from the comfort of your own home or any other appropriate, private location. It’s easy to use with your smartphone, tablet, or computer. In the majority of cases, teletherapy is as effective as in person teletherapy.
